Super List Saturday, May 18, 2013: 12 Funny-lookin’ Utensils in Mom’s Kitchen.

I don’t know what half of these things are for, Mom. They all look like they were designed by aliens or something. There are seven potato peelers in this drawer, that’s crazy. And why do we have so many corkscrews? You only ever buy wine in the box. Why is there a tiny picture frame next to the knives? Picture frames aren’t kitchen utensils. Nothing makes sense.

If any of my followers can tell me what all twelve of these utensils are for, you win a prize. Anyone?

I’ve seen a a lot of loose dogs recently, mostly out and about on my bicycle. You dog owners out there should do a better job keeping tabs on your pets. Also be sure and spay or neuter them, because otherwise they will run around and have all kinds of unprotected dog sex.

Super List Saturday, April 27, 2013: My Week—3 Bad Things, 3 Good Things.

I had decided to make a list about bad things happening to me when, in the same day, a beetle fell out of the ceiling onto my neck and I cut my finger. But my cousins from Australia demanded to be included in this week’s list, so I decided to go Yin-Yang and balance out the bad things with some good things.

If you’re wondering, the beetle was a Caterpillar Hunter, also known as a Fiery Searcher. After I brushed it off my neck frantically I scooped it up and set it free outside.

I recently came across an article about important creative habits, and it mentioned keeping your work area tidy. That got me thinking about how I keep everything in piles, which I thought would make a great SLS. So instead of cleaning up my piles, I drew them. The article was helpful.

Sushi World, 2013. Acrylic and glow-in-the-dark paint on paper, 5”x7”.

I made this painting as a thank-you to my biffle Vickie who did some Google work for me over the phone when I was stranded in Dallas late one night and needed to find a nearby business that was open late. She found Sushi World, which is a delicious, magical restaurant. I painted the sign in glow-in-the-dark paint so it’s always lit up in the dark, just like the real one.

Mary Toft seemed like a fitting historical figure for an Easter Sunday falling on the last day of Women’s History Month. A poor resident of the English countryside in the Eighteenth-Century, Toft began a hoax that convinced people she was giving birth to rabbits. If you’re wondering how she pulled it off, it involved her putting baby rabbits into her, um, well—actually, I’ll let you look it up yourself. I first learned about Mary Toft from the wonderful Baby Geniuses Podcast, and The Awl has a great article about her.

Super List Saturday, March 30, 2013: 12 Frames in the Dallas Museum of Art.

I illustrated this week’s list from sketches and photos I made during my volunteer shift at the Dallas Museum of Art last Saturday. Some of them are from framed works of art, but most of them are from the Wendy and Emory Reeves Collection, where there is an entire room surrounded in ornate, gilded frames hung without anything inside them.

Super List Saturday, March 9, 2013: 32 Pieces of Silverware at the Dallas Museum of Art.

I drew this on location in the DMA last week after my volunteer shift. The museum has a bunch of great early American decor and artifacts, and I always enjoy the silver.

The scimitar-looking knives are ice cream hatchets, which is a great item of silverware everyone should own.
